Met allerhande slagwerkopstellingen integreert Robbert van Hulzen zijn interesse in klankkleuren, uiteenlopende muziekstijlen, ritmische complexiteit en muzikale gelaagdheid. Na een begin in death metal en jazz beweegt hij zich nu tussen geïmproviseerde, hedendaags gecomponeerde, Indiase en Indonesische, en electronische muziek. Momenteel werkt hij aan repertoire voor Om Viloma, zijn nieuwe werelden-in-botsing rock groep met Balkan zangeres / luit speelster Martha Mavroidi, Zuid-Indiase violist Chandru en bassist Marcello Windolph. Daarnaast speelt hij met abstract folk duo Rara Avis (met blokfluitiste Terri Hron, cd One Fell Swoop in 2008 op Karnatic Lab Records) en speelt/speelde hij met een variëteit aan groepen en projecten waaronder danser/choreograaf Michael Jahoda, componist/producer Nitin Sawhney, eigentijds gamelan ensemble Gending, de improvisatie dans & muziekgroepen Rosie Wooff en Magpie en componist Merlijn Twaalfhoven.
In zijn werk met artiesten van andere disciplines, waaronder theatergroep De Maan en filmmaker Dave Zijlstra, vult hij zijn slagwerk aan met zelfgemaakte electronica om de muziek live te produceren of om soundtracks of interactieve installaties te creëren.
Van Hulzen studeerde drums met Steve Clover in Tilburg en Indiase ritmiek met  MT Rajakesari en BC Manjunath (in Bangalore),  Rafael Reina (in Amsterdam) en Suresh Talwalkar (in Pune). Hij heeft MA graden van het Amsterdams Conservatorium en de Universiteit van Amsterdam.

Robbert van Hulzen’s fascination with colour extends from his hat collection to his work with sound, moving between improvised, contemporary composed, Indian and Indonesian, and electronic music. Besides playing with Gending, he is currently getting together the new rock group  Om Viloma with Greek/Bulgarian and (South) Indian musicians, is half of abstract folk duo Rara Avis with recorder player Terri Hron (cd One Fell Swoop> on Karnatic Lab Records, 2008), and works/worked with a variety of groups and projects including composer/producer Nitin Sawhney, dancer/choreographer Michael Jahoda, improvised dance & music band Rosie Wooff, and composer Merlijn Twaalfhoven.
In his work with artists from other disciplines, including theatre group De Maan and film maker Dave Zijlstra, he mixes his percussion with selfbuilt electronics, to either produce the music live or create soundtracks or (interactive) installations.
Van Hulzen studied South Indian rhythm in Bangalore with MT Rajakesari and BC Manjunath and with Rafael Reina in Amsterdam, drums with Steve Clover, and North Indian rhythm with Suresh Talwalkar. He holds MA degrees from the University of Amsterdam and the Amsterdam Conservatory. His musicological work is rooted in his activities as a performing musician.
